An exceptional panorama

This lovely climbing paradise is located on a site with an exceptional panorama. It’s not just a climbing site, it’s also a magnificent landscape with a natural and cultural heritage.

The valley of hell

The Vallée de l’Enfer is located not far from Saint-Léger-de-Peyre in Gévaudan Authentique. The gorges, formed naturally by the regressive erosion of the Crueize river, are almost 400 metres deep in places. Despite the valley’s narrowness, a small road crosses it, and even a railroad line (XIXᵉ century, Béziers-Neussargues), for which it was necessary to build the Viaduc de l’Enfer, designed by Bauby and Boyer (designer of Eiffel’s Garabit viaduct).

The vegetation in the valley changes according to the exposure of the slopes, offering a variety of landscapes to this natural heritage. The road through the Enfer valley is fairly narrow, but there are a number of facilities that make it easier to cross the valley and take a break to admire the scenery and the Enfer Viaduct!

Le Viaduc de l’Enfer

The structure was designed by Bauby and Boyer on the Béziers-Neussargues railroad line. The viaduct over the Crueize river, nicknamed the “Viaduc de l’Enfer” after the valley it crosses, was built in 1880. An arch bridge, it has a total length of 219 meters, rises 63 meters above the water level and has a maximum span of 25 meters. It was commissioned in 1887 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi et du Canal latéral à la Garonne (Cie du Midi), the concession holder for the line and viaduct.
